for Bep for Emma bible

back to Emma's birth

This little bible and psalmbook has been in the family since 1895. It was a present for Emma's great great grandmother Gijsje Stolp on the occasion of her 18th birthday.

The booklet contains the new testament and all psalms on music and is wrapped in dark green velvet and has a golden clas (lock) inscribed "G.S." (for Gijsje Stolp). It was given by her to her granddaughter Gijsberta (Bep) Smeitink with an inscription on the title page, which translates as:

"For my beloved Bep with the wish of psalm 121-4 from your loving oma G. Burgstede Stolp."

Now it has been passed on to Emma with this inscription, which translates as:

"For my beloved Emma Leonie Gijsje, Be happy and blessed, Your loving Oma Bep (Gijsberta H)".

The family tree has been written on the back page:

* Emma Leonie Gijsje Bos daughter of
* Jan Willem D. Bos son of
* Gijsberta (Bep) H. Smeitink daughter of
* Maria S. Burgstede daughter of
* Gijsberta (Gijsje) Stolp
Note that Emma's grandmother and great great grandmother share the same first name "Gijsberta", but her grandmother is called "Bep", while her great great grandmother was called "Gijsje" in everyday life, which is the name chosen for Emma. Gijsberta is the female version of Gijsbert, which would be Gilbert in English. See also meaning in Dutch
