Cakes
On Wednesday, dad flew to Sydney to work. On Thursday, Piet had his second Kinder (deeltijd kleuterschool) induction. On Friday, Piet went to his nursery for the last time. He did not shed a tear over it, as he was never keen to go. When dad returned to Melbourne on Friday, Piet and Emma were at the airport - in pyjamas - to greet him. On Saturday, Piet and Emma helped mum
bake a birthday cake. This one is for his party at Sunday noon. The
ark is to take to the Sunday afternoon church activity; it has elephants, giraffes, tigers and pandas, as requested by Piet. Unfortunately, mum was unable to find any zebras.
We started Piet's birthday unwrapping presents. Piet was keen to assemble his first lego toy. He got more presents during his party, which we had deliberately kept small for that reason. It will be the last year we dare to, as he voiced surprise about the small number of people attending. The candles were blown out, Piet declined further help, we had our cake and because it was a party, we were allowed to rip up all the coloured tiles, making any self-respecting rockband blush. At the end of the day, Emma was quite interested in her big brother's kids computer, which he received partly to reduce the attraction of his parents' iPad, and Piet assembled his wooden ute. On Monday, Piet took wombat cup cakes to his first official Kinder session (he is in the wombat class), while on Tuesday he took frog cup cakes to the first Dutch playgroup session of the year. All in all, Piet could and did not complain about his birthday celebrations.
Manly
The next weekend, mum, Piet and Emma came up on Thursday to join dad who was staying with
friends near Manly. Mum looked at schools on Friday, while on Saturday we viewed some rental properties. We had a
dip in the water on
Little Manly Beach, five minutes walk from our new home. That afternoon, we played in the
rain. It rained the first ten days that dad worked in Sydney, quite a contrast with Melbourne.
Back in Eltham, we played nicely with our soft toys in our cubby house. Piet kept enjoying his Kinder. He painted his wooden ute. On Friday night, we picked dad up from the airport - and were in bed by 21h30. The next day, we baked some cookies. Sunday was nice weather, so we went for a swim. Nowadays, Piet is about as happy to jump in as his sister, who is quite confident in front of the camera.
The last week
Dad went back to work on Monday. On Tuesday, Piet and Emma had their last swimming lesson in Eltham - it's been over a year. In the afternoon was our last
Dutch playgroup session, for which mum baked a
birthday cake: it was their second anniversary.
