In September we got back into our usual routine. If possible, mum takes the kids to school on their bikes (and hers). On Wednesdays, while Piet is at school, Emma goes to gymnastics, which she enjoys. Her parents think she is very flexible.

face paint possum On the weekend, we went to the family fun day organised by the parents committee of Emma's pre-school. The goal of the day is fun in combination with some fundraising. Games were: find the gold in the sandpit (to be exchanged for a golden chocolate coin), catch the fish from the paddling pool with an fishing rod, walk the obstacle course, paint a plaster cast, and get your face painted. Another attraction was the resident possum (buidelrat) Rosy, who came out to snack on some food, admired by many children, but not Piet, who only gave him a passing glance before continuing to run around the garden.

Piet and Emma decided to collect the berries in the front garden - they are aware they can't be eaten. In the morning, we try to read a reader with Piet. Sounding out all the words in English is tiring; he often guesses them.

After nearly two years of pre-school and school, Piet needed a new lunch box. Mum bought him one similar to Emma's except with pirates instead of farm animals. It's a joy to see them so happy and excited about a lunch box. He had not expected a new lunchbox, but when Mum said she would try washing the old one, Piet asked why. Mum said that it had become very smelly and held it under Piet's nose to show him. He took a big sniff and said 'It smells nice. It smells like platy'.

Piet was very excited about the upcoming excursion to a city farm. When mum picked him up from school, he insisted until mum gave in: "I need a piece of paper". When provided the piece of paper in the school yard, he wrote down the list of items to remember for the next day. Dad is impressed as much by his memory as by his writing. When mum goes shopping, Emma often helps unpacking all groceries from the shopping bags - mum would like to add she normally brings reusable bags. On Monday, as an exception, mum took Katy and Emma to an indoor playground where they enjoyed the ride in a teacup. Afterwards, they got a lollypop; Emma told her brother all about it at dinner.

Tuesday was a big day: Piet went to the city farm and saw many animals, including rabbits, and patted at least one goat. He talked about it at dinner: does a cow say moo through his nose or mouth? Either way, Piet can do a good impression. Normally, he is not chatty at all about school. On Wednesday, after stories and before going to sleep Piet wrote about his excursion (adding the odd comma for legibility, but keeping his phonetic spelling):

On Tuesday we went to the farm, it was orsm because I saw two pekokse they were kulfll. I also saw two kangroos and four emyoose. Zoe saw them first, then I saw them. I also got to see to turcese. , just dfor (=bfor) that I saw lots of hens. I also saw a rooster had uscaped. I also got to see a dog rowned up sheep, it was sooper, we also got to see a farmer shearing a sheep, it was sooper. I also saw two geese and lots of duks, they had a litll poned. We also got to see a kwarlar, she was sleeping in a tree, it was sooper dooper, we also got to see a wombat, it was orsm. We also saw twe shetlned poanees and one foal, it was sooper, arftr that we saw a kamll, it was orsm, we also saw two larmers, it was orsm. We also saw four cows; two had karvs, it was sooper. We also saw four wiylled pigs, it was sooper.
