Piet has become really interested in Roald Dahl books, for example the witches and the Big Friendly Giant, which he calls "chapter books". He can read little bits but needs to be read the rest.
On the Tuesday before the end of term, we set of for a three hour drive to Jervis Bay, were we intended to camp four nights. We left a day early because of a rainy third day, but had a nice time anyway. Juliana was placid and Piet and Emma played together most of the time. Sometimes on the beach and sometimes drawing (when it was wet). We went for a walk, which reminded us we had not done that for a long time, as Piet and Emma were complaining loudly after only 1km. For pictures, see:
After camping, we drove on along the coast to opa and oma. It was Juliana's first time in Bendoc. Piet and Emma were keen to be read their bedtime story by opa and oma. The next day, Opa had a surpise for them: the family's old trainset. He had laid a track on a board and Piet and Emma received a Thomas train to run on it. After a bit of practice, the kids were able to operate the trains. They quickly built a zoo on the board, ferrying animals to their yards.
Picking mushrooms
On one of our backpaddock walks, we brought a basket to
pick mushrooms. Conditions had been good, so the mushies were
massive. Large enough to be used as
hats and to be spotted
from a mile. Dad went back to Sydney to work the last few days before Easter in his new department (he had moved on 1st March).
Opa had bought the kids a billy cart, just in case Piet and Emma get bored playing outside with the trampoline, swings, tire swings and sandpit or having a picnic. While the weather was good, mum and grannybunts drove up Delegate hill, where Emma had a look through the binoculars and played with 'aboriginal stones' with Piet. Back home, both are able to entertain their little sister, for a while at least.
On Good Friday, grannybunts baked hot cross buns and the next day was pappa's birthday; Piet and Emma had made drawings, wrapped the presents and helped unwrap them. They also decorated the cake with grannybunts.
On Easter Sunday, like two years ago, the kids were excited about the Easter egg hunt. At 7am, it was still misty outside. After another round of breakfast, they could eat their fair share of chocolate. Juliana is still happy to be carried.
