From the Dordogne we spent three days travelling to Frankfurt. The slow pace made the driving relaxed; we would simply stop as often as the kids required. Piet enjoyed the kids menu in the restaurants, which invariably consisted of melon as a starter, a main course containing fries or potatoes and icecream as dessert. He also played happily with his cars in the hotel rooms.
In Frankfurt we stayed with Kirsten, Heinz and Luca. Kirsten used to live in London, but we had not seen her since Luca was born three years ago. Piet and Luca were an immediate match. They loved running after each other through the apartment while screeching, for example, and they shared an interest in cars. This left four adults to supervise Emma, Emma and Emma and take pictures. On top of that the weather was great and we had exclusive use of the communal garden with sandpit, which Piet could not get enough of. You understand we all had a relaxing week.
One day, we went to the Palmgarten, a botanical garden in the middle of Frankfurt, with a little train for children and playgrounds where we could have our coffee and Luca and Piet could explore the little walls. Another day, we had a barbecue and the last day we went to the Rhine river and visited a castle, a village and a cloister.
