With the move to Manly, Piet got a much larger room. What is interesting is that he has started to insist on neurotically tidying up his room, both during the day and before going to bed. We are wondering how long this will last. Another difference in the new house is the absence of any heating. No heating is normal in Sydney for older houses, reflecting the warmer climate compared to Melbourne. The coldest month in Sydney is July, with an average daily high of 16.3 degrees and low of 8 degree (see wikipedia), compared with 13.5 and 6 degrees for Melbourne and 4.6 and -0.6 in Utrecht (for January, the coldest month there). Sydney is also much more humid, washing barely dries inside the house.
The last weekend in April, we went to Melbourne. Mum had a wedding on 4th May and the corresponding girls day out to some wineries on the last Saturday in April. We visited many friends, while dad went back to Sydney to work Monday through Thursday. We stayed at Jo and Pete's. While the kids initially preferred watching videos on the iPad, they warmed up to them a bit later. We played with the train tracks with Great Aunt Jo (also known as GAJ) and ran around in the garden with Great Uncle Pete (GUP) and sometimes alone. GAJ reads us a book. The weather was cold, but we had fun in the rain with our raincoats. Emma helped hang up the washing. Finally, due to the wedding we celebrated Emma's birthday on the 5th May in a covered playground in Eltham. We had cake with candles, which Emma refused to blow out as she had said that she 'did not want to have a party'.
As a present for oma's upcoming birthday, we collected sand and shells on the beach, painted the sand and put it together in a creative collage. After some careful packing, this made its way to the Netherlands.
Piet went to Dutch school 'De Kangoeroe' for the first time. This school runs on five locations in Sydney from 4pm till 6pm. Piet attends in French Forest, which works bests traffic wise. Teacher Jori talks with a group of about a dozen children, who need to raise their hand when they want to talk. Homework consists of colouring pictures that rhyme, for example. On his first day, he was allowed to take little bear Bert home with a notebook for reconding all his adventures. After meeting a pirate, we took beertje Bert to the zoo in Monday, where we watched seals and played with elephants. Later that week, Piet got his first haircut at a hairdresser - up till now, mum had kept his hair in check. The concept of a hairdresser was a bit scary, but with the promise of a lollypop, all went well.
No bones about
The next weekend, we went on a dinosaur bone hunting expedition, see these:
